Every month here at A.S.S. we interview a spanko. We try to offer a mix of the different people that make up this wonderful community we all share. This time around we’re interviewing a new friend of ours, Dana Kane.  Dana lives in Las Vegas and she has a busy spanko life.  She’s a blogger over at Ms Dana Kane and has a Tumblr account at DanaKane.  She’s also on FetLife and Twitter.  Dana occasionally attends spanking parties, including the recent Crimson Moon bash… she produces and stars in spanking videos, which can be found at DanaKaneSpanks.com…  she’s active on SpankingTube… and she’s also a full-time professional Disciplinarian.

Like we said, busy! But all that go-go-going certainly makes for an interesting and insightful interview. We really enjoyed getting to sit down with Dana and hear about her thoughts and experiences. This is a good interview and we’re excited to share it with you.

1 – When did you first realize you had an interest in spanking? Any idea what first sparked the interest?

My first leanings were not necessarily toward spanking, but more based on the fact that I was obsessed with other people’s posteriors. I was a tall, skinny kid with no backside to speak of, so I spent a lot of time staring at everyone else’s. This eventually led to the urge to grab, squeeze, smack, and otherwise handle said posteriors. From there, it seems like the progression was just absolutely natural.

~We were just talking about how many people find their interest in spanking thanks to their ‘obsession’ with posteriors. Might do a Roundtable discussion about the topic.~

2 – When did you give your first adult consensual spanking and how would you describe the overall experience?

Pinning down the first actual adult spanking has always been hard for me, as I’m sure that there have been many ‘little spankings’ that have been lost to memory. With that said, my first really strong memory – one that comes back to me often – is one of standing over my giggling friend, many years ago, as she tried to fend off blows from a little riding crop I’d purchased.

~If you purchase a riding crop… and don’t own a horse, lol… good chance your first spanking is coming soon!~

3 – When did you first find the spanking/kink community and how did you come up with your scene name?

I’ve only been actively participating in a wider spanking community for the last few years, since I moved west. Oh, and Dana is my real name…I’d never be able to pull off a familiar pseudonym. Kane was a simple, almost accidental, addition.

~We’d be endlessly lost if we had different ‘scene’ first names. All for keeping it simple!~

4 – You have lots of experience spanking both men and women. What, if any, are the major differences between the two?

In my experiences, the gender similarities far outweigh the differences. For the most part, it seems as though we are all ‘in it’ for intimacy of one kind or another. While some ladies do seem to be able to reach the spanking valhalla – tears – more easily than their male counterparts, and a larger number of those men have built extremely high tolerances to pain…there are exceptions to every rule.

~It does seem form what we have observed that men do often take harder spankings. Like you say though, there are definitely exceptions to that.~

5 – How many different spanking implements do you own? Do you have a favorite?

Isn’t it funny how the spanko brain works? I’ve immediately begun considering all the things around my home which I’ve used for spanking but aren’t actually considered ‘implements’, and wondering whether to include them in my tally.

Conservatively though, I’d say around two hundred “spanking” implements. I use a lot of Cane-iac products, and also love Leather Thorn’s beautiful pieces. Lately I’ve developed a love for shoehorns.

~It is hard to come up with a total, especially when pervertables are included. We’re definitely fans of Cane-iac too, and have spotted some of their stuff in your pictures and videos.~

6 – You’ve made some spanking videos for your ‘Dana Kane Spanks’ site. What have you thought about that experience? How does it compare to spankings given off of camera?

It’s pretty obvious that I’m a ham. Constructing a character, scene, persona, etc. has always been fun for me, so making the spanking and POV videos is an excellent extension of that part of my personality. Most of my videos feature my real-life partner, friends, and playmates, so the chemistry we achieve is real and natural.

On lights, camera, and such: This is an extremely small production I’m running, so the rigamarole is pretty minimal.

~We very much see that connection in your videos, which can only come from real life chemistry.~

7 – You’ve offered some “Tips for Tops” on SpankingTube. What’s your best advice for a new spanker that is just starting out? What about more experienced spankers, what generally speaking do you think they could do to improve?

While I wouldn’t assume that most experienced spankers need much advice (practice makes perfect!), my best words of wisdom for someone just beginning to explore spanking would likely be simple:

If you’re not having fun, you’re doing it wrong.

~Well said, we couldn’t agree more.~

8 – You moved from Las Angeles to Las Vegas about a year ago. What do you think of Vegas and specifically the spanking scene in your new city?

I love Las Vegas. The neon lights don’t entice me, so my city is completely separate from the one that visitors see. It’s quiet, and the scenery is beautiful.

While I’m extremely plugged-in online, I’m also not the most social person in the world. Large gatherings, especially, make me a little hinky, so while I do enjoy the occasional party – it’s not a big part of my lifestyle.

~We both love Vegas too, though honestly have never found much of a spanko/kink scene in sin city.~

9 – Your blog has lots of spanking pictures and videos as well as written stories. Which is your favorite medium?

It’s hard to explain, but I’ve become slightly obsessed with giving things away lately. I post free spanking videos and hold spanking story writing and photo contests, and write an occasional piece in a series called “Conversations with Spankos”. One thing I’ve learned is that we spanking enthusiasts love to share our imaginations with others, so giving people a forum to do that has been a lot of fun. I’ve watched people make connections and new friends, explore previously-hidden talents, and engage in a little harmless exhibitionism…all in the name of our common interest in spanking. I’m grateful to everyone who’s contributed their time and energy.

10 – Do you have a spanking fantasy or something on your ‘spanko bucket list’ that you haven’t yet had a chance to do?

As a matter of fact, I checked something off my fantasy list just last week, giving a spanking on a ship’s balcony overlooking the Caribbean. Fantastic!

~That’s still on the top of our list! Hoping 2013 will be our year.~

11 – Among many other things, you are also a professional disciplinarian. How long have you been doing that and what are the biggest rewards and challenges of being a professional disciplinarian?

Having literally despised every other form of employment I’d encountered during the first 36 years of my life, one day I decided to figure out how to do something that I loved, every day, and still eat well.

That was a good day.

~It does indeed sound like a good day… and a great job.~

12 – Have you ever switched and been given a spanking? If so, what are your thoughts on that experience and do you think being spanked helps make for a better spanker?

I have had many enjoyable spankings, but have found that in recent years my interests lean almost exclusively toward topping. I do believe that a certain amount of empathy may be gained by experiencing both sides of the paddle, but that it’s not integral to the spanko experience.
