Diet Update

January 22nd, 2013

A busy-busy week here. We’ve had several appointments at Mayo over the last few days. As you might know Todd has had two different kidney transplants… one back in 1998 and then another in 2006. Things have been going well with that second transplant, though some issues that could have a long-term impact have come up recently… namely elevated blood pressure, blood sugar and protein levels.

If those issues were to remain unchecked they’d eventually destroy the transplanted kidney, so coming up with a plan is important. The most invasive approach would be medication… specifically blood pressure and insulin. Those aren’t good option, especially insulin. It’s possible that might be the only option though. Before that happens though, the most gentle approach is going to be tried first… which boils down to diet adjustments, exercise and losing weight.

So the slower and more relaxed approach needs to be changed to something quicker paced. Change needs to happen fast. It’s not intimidating because we made incredible progress over the first half of 2012. It wasn’t until we made our move out west that problems came up. Being on the road, then living with family, then in a vacation rental… it really messed with our routines and made it easy to fall back into bad habits. Those excuses are all gone now though, as we’re headed to our new place by the end of the month.

So a real focus on health and diet!

We also had some really-really good news too. As you might know from our OTK Fantasy Football League, we enjoy playing fantasy football. Well there is a national fantasy football game Todd plays in. The contest only runs during the playoffs. Have had great luck at the game through the years… winning the entire thing back in 1999, finishing second in 2004 and then several other top 10 finishes through the years.

Well, this year Todd won again! It doesn’t even matter what happens in the SuperBowl, the lead is so large that it isn’t possible to be caught. The win is worth $3700… which aint bad for a game that cost all of $30 to play.

That money is going to make moving a lot-lot easier.

So overall a good week here, though time to get serious about health issues.

Friends Update

Carye: Battling the flu has been the focus of Carye’s week. Just figuring out how to keep anything down has been the challenge, so obviously diet issues are deep on the back burner. This flu has been keeping her down for a few weeks too, so we’re really-really hoping she can get over it. She thinks that’s the case… so fingers crossed!

_____

Jean: Jean spent some time with family this week doing some tourist type stuff with them. It was good to see her out having fun like that. The elevated blood sugar issues she was having seem to have gone away too, which is certainly good news. Good chance we’ll be picking Jean’s brain about blood sugar issues here in the near future, given our findings at Mayo. She certainly knows her stuff too… which is yet another reason we’re lucky to have Jean in our life.

_____

Courtney: Courtney didn’t get us an update this week, but we know she too has been battling the flu. Do hope she is close to being back to full health!

_____

Maxine: Maxine has started working on her health issues, which is good to hear. She’ll be having major knee surgery coming up… likely followed by another knee surgery. Double-ouch there, but it is something she really needs to get done. Maxine has been a good girl about cutting back on and adjusting her work schedule, especially the things that have her on her feet (which has been as much as 10-12-14 hours in a day). Good chance she will be able to make it out to Arizona this summer, and it would be nice if she could be pain free (at least everywhere besides her bottom!).
